CALEDONIAN BRAVES CONQUER EUROPE: A HISTORIC FENIX TROPHY WIN

14th May 2025

A small club with big ambitions has made history. The Caledonian Braves, founded in 2019, have stormed through the FenixTrophy tournament to secure their first-ever European trophy, becoming the first club in 42 years to claim a European title. The Braves’ victory marks a historic achievement for the club and further solidifies their position as a rising force in the world of football.

A Journey Built on Unity and Dedication

The Braves’ meteoric rise is nothing short of remarkable. In just five years, the club has gained a substantial global following, with nearly 9,000 owners and a momentum that’s shaking up the Scottish football scene. In April 2025, the Braves hosted their first-ever Owners Weekend, a testament to the growing support and community behind the club. Their journey is one of ambition, innovation, and community, with their European triumph marking just the beginning of what promises to be a historic journey.

The Road to Italy: A Test of Resilience

Upon arrival in Italy, the Braves wasted no time in familiarising themselves with the stunning surroundings of Lake Iseo. Embracing their mantra, Being Brave, they took to the lake for some team bonding, diving in headfirst to the experience and strengthening their unity ahead of the crucial matches. It was the perfect start to what would become an unforgettable weekend.

With a dedicated coaching staff and players who were fully committed to their goal, the team was ready to make the most of this opportunity. The Braves' unity was evident in every moment leading up to the tournament, and it would carry them through to their ultimate triumph.

Training Through the Storm

On Friday morning, despite torrential rain, the Braves showed their resilience by pushing through a demanding training session. Coach Ricky Waddell’s commanding voice guided the players through the storm, embodying the team’s determination to succeed. Following the session, the team welcomed a visit from Frederick Villum of Veo Technologies, whose cutting-edge AI-driven match and training analysis technology has been a key asset to the Braves' training process for the past few years. Fred and Simon, also in attendance, documented the experience, showcasing the Braves’ digital-first approach to football.

Saturday – Semi-Final Victory: Braves 3-0 Berchem Sport

Saturday arrived, and the Braves faced Berchem Sport in the semi-finals. The breathtaking backdrop of Lake Iseo added to the electric atmosphere, with Braves fans proudly supporting their team alongside Berchem’s supporters.

The Braves took control early. Greig Stewart opened the scoring with a header from a Ryan Murray corner, giving the Braves a 1-0 lead. The celebration was ecstatic as the players swarmed around Stewart, sharing in the excitement of the moment.

A fortunate own goal from Berchem’s defense doubled the Braves’ lead, and by halftime, the Braves were cruising at 2-0. The stands were filled with family members of the players, many of whom had traveled to Italy to support the team, creating an emotional atmosphere.

In the second half, goalkeeper Bernie White made key saves to keep Berchem at bay, while Ross “Fine Wine” McNeil added a third goal, sealing a dominant 3-0 victory. The Braves had secured their place in the final.

Sunday – The Fenix Trophy Final: Braves 3-1 FC United of Manchester

The stage was set for the final showdown against FC United of Manchester. As the two teams walked onto the pitch, flares lit up the stands and chants rang out from FC United’s supporters, joined by those of Berchem Sport, who had just secured third place. The Braves’ supporters, alongside family members of the players, stood proudly between the two fan bases.

SILENCE. The teams awaited the announcer.

"WELCOME TO THE FENIX TROPHY FINAL—FC UNITED OF MANCHESTER VS THE SCOTTISH CALEDONIAN BRAVES."

The crowd erupted. The tension was palpable. The Braves were ready.

As the final whistle blew, the match began, and from the very first minute, the Braves showed their quality. Although FC United had a few early chances, the Braves quickly found their rhythm. In a crucial moment, Zac Butterworth was fouled just outside the box, but the ball remained in play. John Guthrie seized the opportunity, taking the ball up the right wing and delivering a precise cross into the box. Connor McLaren was perfectly positioned, and with an unstoppable strike, he made European history by being the first Braves player to score in a European final - slotting the ball into the top left corner.

THE BRAVES HAD TAKEN THE LEAD!

The bench erupted in celebration, and the players rushed to the dugout to celebrate the perfect start. The momentum was now with the Braves, and minutes later, they were back on the attack. Zac Butterworth again made a decisive run down the right, cutting the ball back through FC United’s defense. And who was there to meet it?

MCNEILLLLLLLLLL. A clinical strike from Ross McNeil put the Braves 2-0 up, sending them into halftime with a comfortable lead.

In the stands, Chris Ewing, the founding owner of the Braves, was nearly hoarse from cheering but still managed to express his unwavering confidence in the squad. "These boys have more to give, and we will not stop until the final whistle is blown," he said.

A Moment of Glory: Breadner's Historic Header

FC United came out with renewed energy in the second half, pulling a goal back when Jordan Buckley slotted home from a well-executed cross to make it 2-1. But the Braves were not about to let this opportunity slip away.

Ricky Waddell made tactical substitutions, and in the 75th minute, Cameron Breadner—who had only just come on—sealed the win for the Braves. Ryan Murray took a free kick and crossed it into the box. Breadner, known for his left-footed free kicks and corners, rose above the defense and powered a header into the back of the net.

UNBELIEVABLE SCENES. Breadner sprinted towards the Braves’ supporters, his emotions spilling over. This goal wasn’t just a match-winner; it was a historic moment, a symbol of everything the Braves stand for.

NO BRAVES, NO PARTY.

Ricky’s Reflection: A New Chapter

After the final whistle, an emotional Ricky Waddell shared his thoughts on the victory. “It’s incredible to see the squad progress, and this win makes it all worthwhile—not just for the players on the pitch, but for everyone who has supported us along the way. From the fans to the staff, this is a collective achievement. These boys have earned it, but we keep going. We want to progress, we want to win more trophies. So, we’ll take some time to enjoy this, but then it’s straight back to work.”

The Road Ahead

The Fenix Trophy victory is a testament to the Braves’ resilience, unity, and determination. It’s a moment that will be etched in the club’s history forever, and as the celebrations continue, the Braves’ sights are already set on their next triumphs. This is just the beginning of an exciting journey, and the future is looking brighter than ever for the Caledonian Braves.

Huge thanks to all family members who flew out to support the players!!
