Braves aim for first win over Gers to close League campaign in style

24th April 2023

Braves head to Dumbarton tonight seeking their first ever win over Rangers B to end their Lowland League season on a high.

Ricky Waddell’s side come into their final fixture of the Lowland League season off the back of a narrow win over 4th placed Stirling University at Alliance Park on Saturday.

It wasn’t a football match for the purists but Braves came away with three points thanks to Ross McNeil’s nicely taken finish and a solid defensive performance.

Rangers B lie in wait tonight and if any of our previous games against the Wee Gers are anything to go by then it is sure to be a much livelier affair than Saturday’s drab encounter.

There has been a total of 14 goals in the three matches between the sides previously, with six of those coming in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Alliance Park in August.

On that baking hot August afternoon it was Rangers who raced into a 3-0 half time lead. They were coasting to victory it seemed, but Braves had other ideas. An unbelievable reaction ensued in the second 45 minutes as Jamie Watson, Marc Kelly and Scott Cusick scored three in the space of 20 minutes to salvage an unlikely but deserved point.

Opposition Report

The hosts come into this final league game in mixed form with three wins and two losses in their previous five.

Last time out away to East Stirlingshire was also a struggle for the Glasgow side as they required two second half penalties from Arron Lyall to rescue the three points.

Despite this inconsistent run of form, the Wee Gers are sure to be highly motivated to earn the three points which would see them leapfrog rivals Celtic in the final Lowland League table of the season.

Braves can draw level on points with 9th placed Bo’ness with a win tonight but would need a six-goal victory to best their goal difference.

A positive result and performance will be important for Ricky Waddell and his men as we look to carry some momentum into a big Lowland League cup tie away to Gala Fairydean Rovers on Saturday.
